Mathew Bergan
Mathew is a trained Gestalt Therapist (Graduate Diploma in Contemporary Gestalt Therapy and PACFA member), which honours the mind and body connection through talk therapy. He is also a trained Brainspotting (BSP) and Harmonic Brain Healing (HBH) practitioner.
Brainspotting is a psychotherapy technique that helps people process psychological trauma or other problems via eye movements, bilateral stimulation with music, and client therapist attunement. Harmonic Brain Healing assist in breaking free from repetitive and intrusive thoughts and mental images. Like EMDR, a pointer is used to direct a client’s eye gaze. BSP and HBH both use the brain's natural capacity to heal itself by harnessing its ability for self scanning to activate, locate, and process sources of trauma and distress in the body.
Mathew is also a trained somatic counsellor and yoga master, with over 35 years of professional health and wellbeing experience. He practices his own form of meditation, mindfulness and breath work and stays connected to his own body through activities such as gym, yoga, dance, forest bathing, and five senses meditation.
What is Gestalt therapy?
Gestalt therapy is a form of psychotherapy designed to increase a person's awareness, freedom, and self-direction. It focuses on creating agency in the present moment, rather than always excavating past experiences to determine an outcome. Gestalt Therapy believes people are more influenced by their present environment, therefore as a therapist we like to support someone’s current thoughts, feelings and emotions to help them build awareness and determine an outcome.
Contemporary Gestalt Therapy is built upon a relational approach that values your sense of connection to yourself, to others, and to your shared place in the world. It also recognises that the ‘body keeps the score’, and utilises somatic enquiry into stored trauma that maybe within the body, or hidden from awareness.
Contemporary Gestalt therapy also recognises the link between the human experience, and the dual relationship we all share with Nature. Gestalt Therapy has gained considerable traction with Eco Therapy, where a client can choose to be held by nature, alongside the therapist, and experience the support of the land and nature’s eco allies.
